I’m a child of the 90s and so being discerning online feels like it was one of the first things that was drilled into us as kids. But, as the Internet, social media, and online marketing reaches maturity (as in, it’s been around for a while)… we need to be more aware than ever about the kinds of tactics and things to look out for when practicing discernment as consumers and creators.

It felt so important to bring Maggie Patterson into this conversation (you may be familiar with her online marketing deep dives and BS-Free Business podcast)

In 2020, I signed up for a program that promised the world for $10,000 (USD so that was more like 15 for me) and a week or so later, the world shut down.

Up until that point, I hadn’t realised how easily I could be sucked in by marketing messages in the online space that promised a one-size-fits-all method for success, only for you to be lumped in with 100s of other people and the person running the program not even knowing your name.

During that time, I got my money’s worth – and that was to make sure that I carefully considered every purchase and decision I made in my business. As well as whether I was in the right headspace to be making such a big decision.

I don’t know about you, but when my energy is low, or I’m having a down kinda week – that’s when I’m way more susceptible to the big energy in marketing in the online space.

In this episode, we chat about:

  • What Maggie started to notice in online marketing and how she started calling it out YEARS before anyone was interested.
  • The power of showing up for something that important to you even if other people don’t care yet.
  • Maggie’s best tips for being discerning when making big purchases in your business (especially when working with coaches or joining programs)
  • How to manage your energy on social media, especially as an introvert or highly sensitve person
  • And how to not get caught up in the hype of trending buzzwords (like 6-figures in six months) and be on your own journey.
