The problem with the concept of dreams is that they carry with them a weighty level of responsibility, expectation, and pressure.
They’re like the … concept of happiness and fulfilment.
Kind of imaginary.
Maybe you don’t feel ready yet
Let me guess, you’re still working in a job you don’t like that much, you’re living in a rented place, you don’t really know what you actually want?
You don’t know if you deserve the pure joy that comes from doing things that make you happy. Or maybe you’re so bleh on life that you don’t even realise how easy it can be.
I’ll tell you now, it’s okay to not feel ready. But it’s time to get over that.
If you know what’s good for you, you will readjust your expectations about dreams. Life is too freaking short to be putting things off.
Make them REAL already and do one small thing
As I write this, I’m sitting in a cafe drinking coffee, typing on my laptop, and basking in the pure bliss that is doing something I have identified as being part of my dream life. It’s about as simple as a dream can get – working from a cafe – but it taps right into my happy place and reminds me my freedom. The freedom from the traditional 9-5 (or 8-6, in my case), the typical office building, and the restrictive work environment. It’s something I’ve loved the idea of since hearing J.K Rowling’s story and, even in its simplest form, it’s pure bliss.
What’s crazy is that it’s been on my list of ‘Things to do’ for a whole YEAR and this is the first time I’ve actually done it. I can’t even believe it myself, that something so easily done and so aligned with what I want my life to look like, and I haven’t even committed to that!
My point is, if there is something on your ‘to-do’ list that you’ve been putting off (even though you know it will instantly up your happiness), JUST DO IT. Or, even easier, just do one small thing that you identify as living your dreams. One tiny step in that direction.
Dreams don’t have to be lofty and almost impossible, in fact, that’s why I make such a big deal about identifying them and breaking them down. Working out what it is that makes them dreams in the first place and finding a way to get started on them immediately.
Even if it means doing something small and really easy.
Take action
You know me, I will push you to get your shit together and get on with it. You know why?
Because I want you to succeed. I want you to read this post and go, hell yeah, I am going to just go and do (insert thing you have always wanted to do but never have).
But also because I have been one of the worst offenders up to this point. How can a person have something so small and seemingly insignificant on their ‘to do list’ for almost an ENTIRE YEAR and not do it? It’s crazy balls. Especially for someone who is all about living your dreams!
The difference is, though, that today I did it.
Action.
And now I want to encourage you to do it too, because it feels so damn good, even just doing the tiniest thing on your list. Getting one step closer to the you you want to be.
And don’t just read this and feel inspired but forget to do something. That’s the worst.
Darren Rowse, brilliant mind behind Pro Blogger puts it like this:
“Inspiration, without implementation, is empty.”
Do it. Be accountable. Pick something you’ve wanted to do forever and haven’t done, write it in the comments, and bask in the joy of just freaking doing it.
Start before you’re ready.
Start to live your dream life in the real world. It’s so much more enjoyable than waiting until you think you’re ready (because that moment will probably never come).
Start taking your deepest desires seriously!
P.S I’ve got a kick ass special on this month for you, that is, if you really want to step it up this year and tick some stuff off your big dream list! Email me katherine (at) thebeautyoflife (dot) com (dot) au or go here for more info.
