6 Simple Steps To Master Your Message

graphic of katherine mackenzie smith sitting on coach with planner organiser, with purple overlay and text reads ' 6 simple steps to master your message (and connect with your dream clients), katherinemackenziesmith.com The League of Extraordinary Introverts'.

I get asked all the time… “How do I feel more confident sharing my work..?” And – if I’m totally honest – deeply understanding your message, who needs to hear it, and how to share it in a way that connects is right at the top of the list. But it can be SO easy to say that and less easy to do it, so let’s take a look at 5 simple steps to Master Your Message.

Before we dive in, please know that this stuff takes TIME. And, as we chip away at the marble sculpture that is our message that we can share with clarity and confidence, we get more and more clear about it.

But these are hopefully some points to get you thinking about how you can refine and tweak how you talk about your work and share it with the world.

1. Align With The Heart Of Your Work

One thing I notice a LOT in my travels around the online world, is that people are looking to make money. That is often their number one reason for starting a business, or launching a program (even deciding what to launch and who to sell it to).

And, look, no judgement. But – if I’m totally honest – deciding to start a business because you just want to make lots of passive income, get online famous, or work from bed or your private island all day is… Not really my thing, so if that’s you, go live your dream, this post is probably not going to help you!

There are plenty of people selling their special formula or method for success…I wish you all the best on your travels.

If, however, your vision for your business and the work that you are here to do in the world is more about your impact and feeling fulfilled and meaningful, then it’s so important to tap into that energy.

So often we try to think or strategise our core message or sales copy and all the rest, when we actually just need to be guided by the energy of the work we’re here to do and what our people need to hear from us.

TAKE A MOMENT:

  • Sit quietly and take some deep breaths, just allowing your thoughts to fade away
  • Feel into WHY you want to grow this business and what your big vision or goals are for it in the next 3, 6, 12 months.
  • What personal experiences have led you to want to support others in this way or create this for people?
  • How do you see yourself working with people?
  • What is the potential for what you are creating to impact others in a meaningful way?

You might have had a deep personal transformation through coaching or energy work that caused you to start down that path to learning that skill.

Or perhaps you’ve told amazing stories since you were a kid and now you want to write a book to bring that into the world.

When you know what you do and why you do it, you’re able to share your story. Your personal transformation. The deeper calling to the work that you do and your experience getting to where you are today.

It builds trust, it shows people you know what you’re talking about and that you’ve been on a similar journey yourself. The STORY is the starting point to master your message. It’s your origin story.

JOURNAL THIS:

Spend some time journaling your big vision AND origin story. This is so often the heart and soul of the work that you do. Where you came from and what you’re working towards.

2. Aspire With Your Transformation

I’ve worked with 100s (possibly 1000s) of new business owners and coaches over the years in my 1:1s, group, and when I was a trainer for coaches. This is the piece that almost everyone overcomplicates.

And it’s usually just by being WAY. TOO. VAGUE.

You might be just starting out and not actually know what your transformation is yet (if that’s where you’re at, I highly recommend getting some probono clients, stat. It’s so important that you have experience working with people so that you feel confident in what you do and how you do it).

But chances are you have SOME idea of who you want to help and what can happen when they work with you.

The vague-ness comes in when we forget that people are rarely walking around thinking they need our exact product or service.

So we see lots of things like:

“I help women of all ages live their best life.”

or

“Pay me to design your logo.”

When, the reality is that most people are walking around with very pressing, real life challenges or their own big visions for their life and just need to know what to do next to change it in their life.

We show them our offer is a viable one by providing some of those real life examples for them to see immediately that you might just be the right person for them.

So real life examples to master your message and get people to aspire to something, is to get them to think about where they are now, and where they would like to be.

Say you’re a coach or an energy worker. Your potential clients are most likely not walking around going “I just need to have a spiritual awakening” or “I just need a life coach to help me live my best life.”

Any of us who have been through an awakening or transformation rarely feel that in the moment. We actually usually feel pretty terrible because everything starts getting agitated by that call to take the next step in our own personal growth.

Some real life examples might look like. You:

  • Are constantly irritated by your partner and find yourself nagging or picking fights with them.
  • Feel tired all the time, or are experiencing weird health concerns that you can’t get to the bottom of.
  • Wake up in the morning, dreading the day, and wondering if there’s more to life than this.

To keep it simple, their point B might just be the complete opposite of those things after they work with you. Remember, be specific.

Such as…

Imagine:

  • Your relationship being better than ever – you’re having as much fun as you did when you first got together.
  • You have more energy than you’ve had in years, and you feel like you were sleeping but now you are awake.
  • You bounce out of bed each day, excited for what’s to come and confident that you have exactly what you need to handle anything that comes your way.

See how those are real things that people are experiencing where they get to a point they need SOMETHING to change (POINT A)? And then the possibilities of what is possible if they work with you (POINT B)?

Your work is the bridge that will support them to get to where they want to be. Now you have to show them.

JOURNAL THIS:

Take a moment and think about your person. What are their biggest frustrations? The things that happen to them throughout the day that they cannot deal with for another moment? And what is their Point B?

3. Activate Your People To Take Action

Your words, your energy, your intentions, your connections, all of these things have the ability to activate your people. You know when someone says ‘oh I never thought about it like that before’ or ‘that just blew my mind’. Every little drop of ideas and thoughts we share has the ability to completely shift someone’s mindset, energy, view of the world.

Isn’t that exciting? If we can be in the curiosity of that but NOT fixated on it. We need to start caring less about what is happening externally and show up for the mission, the vision, the work as our highest priority.

It’s our job to activate people. It’s our responsibility to be a lighthouse for those who are ready to take action. This is different from manipulating or convincing people by praying on their fears and insecurities.

That way of marketing is still out there. And it still works. But at what cost? I dunno, that’s a question that I always ask myself.

QUESTION:

How can I activate someone’s vision of what’s possible, instead of focusing on their pain?

We do this by providing context. By giving them quick actions that they can take if our message or story resonates. And we invite them to step up and embark on this journey.

Some people will. And other won’t. That isn’t of our concern.

All we’re here to do is to provide the opportunity for the RIGHT people to be activated by our work. Some people will take more touchpoints. I’ve had people email me and say they’ve been following me for years and they started their business because I helped them see it was possible.

And that email was the first time I had EVER heard from them.

It’s important that we focus less on external results and more on building out the container of our work and the meaningful contribution is could potentially make in ONE person’s life.

JOURNAL THIS:

So, what simple action or invitation can you create for your people (on a social media post, in a newsletter, or somewhere else) to start taking action when they come into contact with your work?

Think of one thing that you KNOW is going to help them if they try it out.

is is not about them buying from you or signing up to your list. This is about a small change they might make in their life today as a result of something they learned from you. This is how we build and engaged community who feel connected to us and who trust us.

4. Ask Your People To Take The Next Step

This is the piece that people most stress about in The League of Extraordinary Introverts community. Not wanting to feel salesy.

But the truth is that when you master your message, you won’t feel salesy. You will just be sharing your work in a way that naturally invites the right people to take the next step with you, if it feels right to them.

Imagine this. You go on a date with someone and have the most amazing time. You feel like they see you, like they get you, and that things are going so well. But they don’t even call you again.

What if sharing your message with the right people was like that? Like you’ve created amazing free content, you’ve shown up, you’ve shared your story and they felt SO SEEN.

And then you never invite them to the next step.

Also… in a slightly parallel vein… if you don’t have people coming through and joining your programs or buying your products it’s not a business. So we need to shift how we feel about sales.

I find even thinking of it as an invitation (because, again, we’re not fixated on the outcome. We’re just doing our part for our role in the business – creating the invitations, showing up and sharing, and then doing it again the next day).

Start with this:

Simple calls to action at the end of blog posts, social media posts (even 1:1 communication):

  • Hey, I have this amazing free training coming up I think that you’ll love. Feel free to check it out if you think it will be helpful: (link)
  • Drop me a comment below and let me know (thing that is related to what your post refers to)
  • I’m always looking to create content that is valuable to my VIP community. Hit reply to this email and let me know the biggest thing you need help with right now, I’m here to help.

Here’s one for you:

If you’ve made it this far, hopefully you’re getting some great value out of this post. I am actually running a live free Master Your Message 5-Day Momentum Builder, starting the 8th of Feb. We’re going to be going SO deep with these ideas and putting them into practise PLUS you’ll get loads of free support and take your message to a whole new level.

If that sounds like something you need to be a part of, come register here.

See, simple.

When it comes to inviting people to PAY you, it’s the exact same thing (shock horror!). People will pay for results. They will pay to accelerate their transformation.

And, at the end of the day, you’re not asking them to pay you to deliver something. You’re inviting them to invest in their own expansion and transformation (whether you’re selling coaching, graphic design, VA services, products).

It’s important that we remember this for our people. But also for ourselves. When we invest in our business, we are energetically planting a stake in the ground and saying, “I believe in this, I’m ready, I’m going to make this happen. I’m serious.”

And then we expand in proportion to that comfort zone stretch.

We need to trust that our people are capable of making that declaration for themselves. And giving them the opportunity to do so.

JOURNAL THIS:

What do YOU need to plant your stake in the ground and declare that you are ready to go to the next level and to invite your people to do the same when they invest in themselves!?

5. Accelerate Your Message By Sharing It Far and Wide

When we’re just starting out or we haven’t built a huge following yet (which, let’s face it, is most of us – myself included), it can feel like a bit of an uphill battle to be seen and heard by the right people.

Organic growth IS possible, but it takes time or a lucky combination of things that cause something you create to go viral.

But, for most of us, it’s about being creative about how we get our work in front of the right people.

ORGANIC

We can create content and let organic reach get in front of the people who follow us on various platforms. The thing I notice most consistently about this is that someone will share ONE post about their offer and then feel like they’ve shared it enough. You need to share consistently across multiple platforms and if someone wasn’t online at that EXACT moment, they may never see it (even if they follow you).

PAID

Then there is paid traffic via ads on Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. I am definitely NOT the person to teach you about this but there are plenty of experts out there. Even thinking about how ads might come into your business at some point is important, because it’s the fastest way to accelerate your growth and get your message in front of the right people.

REFERRALS

And then we have referral traffic. This might come through asking our inner circle of friends and followers to share our work. It might come from appearing on podcasts or writing guest posts for other sites. And you can also think of creating affiliate programs for your offerings at some point as well.

There are so many paths you can take to accelerate your growth and get in front of the right people. I personally think it’s most viable to adopt all three into your strategy and just keep trying and testing things until you find what works for you.

If you need a hand even just working out your content plan for repurposing and distributing your amazing work, you might be interested in The Visibility Vault where I have created so many different ways you can take one idea and distribute it across multiple platforms without trying to work out what to post.

JOURNAL THIS:

Take a moment now to think about what you’ve BEEN doing, and how you can connect with or start creating content that will be helpful to your people (with small actions they can take AND a call to action at the end for them to take the next step with you).

6. Join Us For Master Your Message Live

This is the sixth step, but obviously completely up to you. The basic theory is here for you but in the 5-day momentum builder, we’re going to be going deeper and workshopping your ideas and your message out so that by the end of the week you’ll feel clear and confident with what you do and who you help. And how to share it in a way that shows your people you know what you’re talking about.

Last time I ran Master Your Message, these are some of the amazing results the participants brought to life:

  • Sharing their work in a big way on social media, for the first time, and getting the most engagement and support from that one post than anything else they’d shared previously;

  • Having a light bulb moment to create a podcast, coming up with the core message and name, and then launching it a couple of weeks later;

  • Creating and launching brand new, totally aligned offerings;

  • All kinds of content being created – blog posts, new sales pages, social media posts;

  • Going live on social media for the first time to share their story;

  • Rethinking how they create and repurpose content;

  • Working out a whole new way to support their clients;

  • And so much more!

If you’re ready to get more clear and confident about your message (and how to share it) than ever before, come and join us on February 8th!

Get all the details and register for Master Your Message here.
