The other week I was looking over the pages and pages of lists I have of ‘things I want to do this year’ in my business and I practically shouted out loud, ‘Stop!’
It’s too much!
I’m already exhausted and it’s still only January.
I’m starting to push and I haven’t even started yet.
I’m ready to throw in the towel and run away to a tropical island, but this is the thing that I love and want to do most in the whole world.
And then I stopped for a second and asked:
What’s the one thing that matters more than anything else right now?
I ask my clients this question ALL. THE. TIME.
You see, we get in our heads, we talk ourselves out of one thing and into ten other things. We try to do TOO MUCH. And we end up running around so frantically that the only thing left to do is to run away (or hide out on the couch with Netflix, as I’m prone to do).
When you can strip it right back to just one thing, suddenly, you can breathe again. When you can only choose one thing, the most important thing becomes pretty damn clear.
And, if you’re still stuck, here are some questions that might help you with you one thing:
// What’s the one thing you HAVE to do today?
// What’s the one thing that plays on your mind every night when you’re lying in bed?
// What’s the one thing that you’ve been avoiding doing?
// What’s the one thing you could do differently today?
// What’s the one thing you REALLY need help with right now?
// What’s the one thing that’s going to change all the other things?
// What’s the one thing that is going to make all the difference.
Choose one thing. Answer the question. And then do it.
It might look like:
Making the phone call.
Booking the appointment.
Emailing that potential client.
Signing up for that course because you know it’s what you need.
Connecting with that person you’ve wanted to for ages.
Decluttering your space.
Sorting out your inbox.
Chatting to a coach because you don’t know what to do next.
Making a list to get it out of your head.
Calling a friend for some accountability.
Pressing publish on that post you’ve been putting off for ages.
Getting out of the house.
Taking a break.
Doing SOMETHING
Decide what your biggest priority actually is right now (know that can make all the difference)
If it’s really holding you up, make a promise to yourself (or to someone you trust) that it’s going to be the first thing you do. And then do it. Be accountable. Stick to your guns. Eat that frog. And do what you say you’re going to do.
